Hanger Type Shot Blasting Machine
For cleaning, descaling and surface preparation of castings, forgings and other metal components.

What Is a Hanger Type Shot Blasting Machine?
It is a machine that cleans metal parts by throwing steel shot at them.
The parts are hung on a hanger. The hanger carries them into a closed blasting cabinet. Inside, the parts are turned while steel shot is thrown against them. The shot knocks off sand, scale, rust and other loose material. When the cycle finishes, the hanger brings the parts back out.
It is also called a spinner hanger shot blasting machine or simply a hanger shot blasting machine. The parts stay hung throughout, so they are never tipped or tumbled against each other.
How Does a Hanger Type Shot Blasting Machine Work?
The process is the same every cycle:
Parts are loaded
Components are hung on the hanger outside the cabinet, where the operator can reach them.
The hanger moves in
The loaded hanger travels into the blast cabinet and the door closes.
The hanger turns
The hanger rotates so the parts change position during the cycle.
Steel shot is thrown
One or more blast wheels throw steel shot at the parts at high speed.
The surface is cleaned
The shot strikes the surface and removes the unwanted material.
Shot is recovered
Used shot falls to the bottom, is carried back up and separated from dust and broken pieces before being used again.
Parts come out
The hanger returns and the cleaned parts are unloaded.
The abrasive itself is covered on our steel shot page. How the shot is accelerated is explained on the blast wheel page.
Industrial Hanger Shot Blasting Machine in Operation
The video shows the hanger loaded with components, the hanger moving into the cabinet, and the blasting cycle running. Watch the hanger turning while blasting is in progress — that movement is what changes which face of the part is exposed to the shot.
Why Are Parts Rotated During Shot Blasting?
A blast wheel throws shot in one direction. Anything facing away from that stream is in shadow and receives little or no impact.
Rotating the hanger keeps changing which face of the part is pointed at the wheel. A surface that was shadowed a moment ago is turned into the stream.
This does not guarantee that every surface is reached. Deep pockets, blind holes and the inside of enclosed sections may still not be cleaned, however long the cycle runs. Rotation improves how much of the outside surface is exposed — it does not make the shot travel around corners.
What Does a Spinner Hanger Shot Blasting Machine Remove?
Depending on the part and the settings used, blasting can remove:
- Moulding sand left on castings after shakeout
- Mill scale and heat treatment scale
- Rust and surface oxidation
- Casting residue and loose surface material
- Old paint or coating that is already loose
How much comes off, and how quickly, depends on the condition of the part, the size and quality of the steel shot, the blasting time and the finish you need. Two parts that look similar can need different settings.
What Parts Can Be Shot Blasted in a Spinner Hanger Machine?
A hanger machine suits parts that can be hung and that should not knock against each other:
- Castings
- Iron and steel castings that need sand and scale removed before machining or paint.
- Forgings
- Forged components carrying heat treatment scale.
- Fabricated assemblies
- Welded frames and structures that would be damaged by tumbling.
- Machined components
- Where blasting is suitable for the finish required.
- Larger single parts
- Components too big or too heavy for a tumble machine.
What decides whether a part is suitable
- Size — the part must fit inside the cabinet with clearance to rotate
- Weight — the hanger and drive have to carry the loaded weight
- Shape — parts with deep recesses may not clean fully
- Hanging point — the part needs somewhere to hang from
- Number of parts per load, and how they are spaced so they do not shadow each other
Machine size and load capacity can be selected according to the component and production requirement.
How to Choose a Spinner Hanger Shot Blasting Machine
These are the points we go through with a customer before recommending a configuration:
- 01Production required
- Parts or tonnes per shift. This decides cabinet size and wheel count more than anything else.
- 02Batch arrangement
- How many parts hang per load, and whether loading is manual or assisted.
- 03Starting surface condition
- Heavy sand and thick scale need more blasting energy than light rust.
- 04Finish required
- Cleaning for machining is a different target from preparing for paint.
- 05Steel shot size
- Larger shot hits harder; smaller shot covers more area. The choice affects both finish and cycle time.
- 06Loading and unloading method
- Single door, double door or pass-through changes the floor layout.
- 07Floor space and height
- Hanger machines need headroom for the hanger and the abrasive return.
- 08Dust extraction
- The dust collector is sized against the machine, not chosen separately.
